Karma Rescue Education Program

‚ÄčAll students participated in the Karma Rescue Education Program on April 4-5, 2016. The program teaches students how to be responsible members of the animal community. Through the positive and engaging curriculum, TK-2nd grade students were able to build literacy and self-confidence skills by reading along to certified Canine Good Citizen dogs. Our 3rd-5th graders learned  about the importance of spay and neuter, micro-chipping, and choosing adoption over purchase. They were able to create poster with the theme of adopting a pet to share with other schools. We were all happy to hear that each visiting dog has been adopted and cared for by their new loving family.

Playa Learning Garden

PlayaGarden.jpgThe Playa Learning garden is an ongoing project that covers approximately 4000 square feet of space. Students gain from this “outdoor” classroom and learn and appreciate nature and its surroundings. Students engage in hands on learning allowing them to learn different subjects at the same time, including, science, math, health, history and social studies. In addition to these academic lessons, the garden teacher life lesson as well. In caring for the garden students must exercise their sense of responsibility, patience, self confidence, curiosity and nurturing.

P.S. Arts

Restoring the Arts to Public Education
P.S. ARTS is a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization dedicated to restoring arts education in public schools by providing comprehensive, skills based, sequential classes in dance, music, theater and visual arts.
At Playa P.S. ARTS goal is to design a program that best fits the needs of the students and the community. Whether it's visual arts, music, theater arts or dance, the instruction is created and aligned with the state standards in the visual and performing arts.

The Arts Program

Art.jpgPlaya del Rey Elementary School is part of a nationally recognized, standards-based art education program. Students have access to dance, music, theatre and visual arts.

Dance- Dance is an integral part of society. As students dance, their creative abilities begin to suggest spontaneous movements as they improvise their responses to the music. Dance has been described as communication between soul and soul, expressing what is too deep and fine for words.

Music -Existing in every culture and generation, music embodies the distinctly human need to organize sounds to express the dimensions of human feeling.

Theater-Theater is a collaborative art that enhances communication and is accessible for all students. Through their experiences with drama, students develop their imaginations and their confidence.

Visual Arts-Through the visual arts, images become part of language, building on a child's natural inclination to communicate. Painting, drawing, sculpture and other visual art forms are a kind of talking about life.

Mad Science

MadScience.jpgThese hands-on, one-hour science programs are themed around a particular area of science and include such topics as rocketry, magnets, polymers and even the science of toys. Children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, participate in inquiry-based discussions and take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty and more.

Network for a Healthy California
