Hello Playa Families:

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome back all of our returning families, as well as those of you who are new to us this year! As a part of this amazing staff, I am thrilled and looking forward to another outstanding school year. We are ready for the task of preparing all students to be successful learners. Our school community is dedicated to providing our students with a well-rounded educational experience. While the core curriculum is provided for all students, we believe that it is critical to provide leadership opportunities, character education, arts education and exposure to technology in order to prepare students to be college-prepared and career ready as 21st century learners.

This year will be filled with numerous learning opportunities for our students, as well as our parents. Playa del Rey Elementary takes great pride in establishing an atmosphere that invites its valued stakeholders to be a part of the educational process. Throughout the year, parents are provided with many opportunities to participate in the education of their child. We welcome your attendance at school events and encourage your participation by volunteering in our school. Thank you in advance for being a valued member of our team!!

Lastly, we are looking forward to seeing your child at the Back To School Picnic on Monday, August 13, 2018, 12:00 p.m. and on the first day of school on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. If you have any questions prior to the start of school, don’t hesitate to contact us at 310-827-3560.

Dear Parents/Guardians:

RE:  SPRING CAASPP NOTIFICATION LETTER

From Tuesday, May 1, 2018 – Wednesday, May 15, 2018  your child will be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System.

CAASPP is an annual academic testing system that provides information on student progress to ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and/or career. CAASPP assessments include English–language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics for students in grades 3 – 5.  Students in grades 5 take a science test.

The tests include traditional multiple-choice questions as well as ones that require students to explain their answers and show their work.  To learn more, you and your child can visit the California Department of Education Website at this web address http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/  and select the Parent and Student tab

Following spring 2018 CAASPP testing, individual student CAASPP score reports will be available to parents. Student reports include an overall score and a description of the student’s achievement level for ELA and mathematics. Reports will also be available for students who take the science test.

These test results aren’t meant to tell the whole story. The scores are one of several ways for you and your child’s teacher to see how your child is progressing in school. Report cards and teacher’s observations of your child’s performance in the classroom are also used to form a complete picture of your child’s achievement.

As the parent or guardian, you have the option of excusing your child(ren) from any part of the CAASPP.  If you would like to excuse your child from any of the tests, you must submit your request in writing to the school [Education Code 60615.]  Please let the school know as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements for your child(ren).

At PLAYA DEL REY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL our goal is for all students to achieve their full potential. The CAASPP test results are one way we can better understand if we are meeting that goal. Thank you for all you do to partner with us in your child’s education.  If you have any questions regarding CAASPP, please contact us at 310-827-3560.

Thank you,

Valencia Blue,

Hello Playa Families!

Welcome to week 27 and the month of March. This month we celebrate Women’s History Month as we take the time to honor and celebrate the contributions of women in American History. International Women’s Day (March 8). We also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th

As we enter the spring quarter and second half of the school year, please help remind your children of the importance of keeping a positive attitude. Attitude #1: Watch your words. Words are powerful. Let them know your expectations to speak kindly to one another. Teach them to counter the unkind words with nice ones. Remember KINDNESS always wins! Attitude #2: Accept everyone. Leaving people out on purpose is not being fair or kind. Suggest that your child look for ways to make others feel that they belong or included.

This message ties in with our character education trait of Fairness. Acts of being fair includes: playing by the rules, taking turns & share with others, listen and have compassion for others, include others and treat a friend how you want to be treated. Character tickets will continue to be rewarded each week to students showing their BEST behavior. Prizes will be awarded on Friday.

February Giving: Thank you to families that donated canned fruit cups last month. With your help, donations have been delivered to the Westside Food Bank. ♥

Read Across America Spirit Week Winners:  Top Participant Rm. 15 (100%); TK-1 Rm. 6 (92%); Gr.2-3 Rm.7 95%; Gr. 4-5 Rms. 10&13 85%. Thank you to all that participated.

Hello Playa Families!

Greetings Playa Families,

Welcome to week 24. What an awesome week we had! The students are constantly amazing me with their many accomplishments. I have observed students in class really focused on building their academic skills and developing good character practices. In preparation for our Science Fair, students are focusing on inquiry based science projects. Teachers are engaging students in science and engineering practices integrated with a garden-based theme.

Within the next two weeks, all students will be taking standards based assessments in  ELA (K-5) and Math (3-5) to continue monitoring academic growth and development. Be sure to encourage them to share what they’re learning, persevere, and to stay focused.

Hello Playa Families!

Ms. Blue's message can also be found in .pdf form HERE.

Welcome to week 9:

Many great things have been happening across our campus these past few weeks. As we come to a close of the first reporting period, I want to thank the Teachers for working hard to ensure all students are engaged in daily lessons and for challenging students to reach their desired academic goals. Please note the Common Core State Standards are focusing on students being able to use critical thinking skills and strategies to solve problems as well as students being able to read independently and proficiently at grade level by the end of each year. This period will focus on the first 55 days of instruction for academic and social progress as you prepare for conferences next month.

Health Update: We’ve had frequent cases of head lice in the past two weeks.  I want to thank families that have contacted the school immediately to notify our staff. Please know that we do our best to prevent spreading but know there are steps to take for re-infestation:
*Reduced head to head contact. Remind children not share hats or decorative headgear.
* All bed linens should be laundered in hot water and placed in a hot dryer for the desired amount of time.
* Toss snuggle items that may have been in contact during the time frame. (nits take 6 to 9 days to hatch). For more information please view (here).

Our school nurse, Ms. Rafifar,is with us every Thursday during school hours for any additional concerns or questions you may have.

Safety Reminders.  While in the Valet Drop-Off Line on Juniette I would like to request that you have your child ready to exit the car when you enter the line. It helps to keep the valet line flowing smoothly. When there is a hold up it does cause a severe back up and the flow of traffic halts. Please help us to ensure the safety of all our Playa and neighborhood families coming to school. Also, our staff parking lot is only open to staff to parking. Thanks to everyone who continues to use our drop-off services and the Volunteers that help ensure safety every day.

Hello Playa Families!

Welcome to week 8 and here’s a look ahead:

Thank you to everyone who participated in the national walk to school day last week!  We had a great turn-out of about 65 families to help promote health and physical fitness.

Thank you to FOP, the Fall Festival Committee, parent volunteers, students and staff who helped, supported and participated in our annual Fall Festival this year! It was another successful event.

special thank you to 5th grade parent volunteers (Mr. Walters & Mr. Hartigan) for the SPOOKtacular haunted hause set-up and display. It was fun for all.

We are thrilled to announce that Playa del Rey will be represented in the inaugural Del Rey Bee at Glen Alla Park on Sunday, October 15th @ 11AM. Come and show your spirit for our Dolphins for the following Spelling Bee participants:

Mia Rubalcava (Gr. 4-Ms. Elliott’s class) & Joann Thomas (Gr. 5-Ms. Sheffie’s class)
We wish all the spellers the best of luck in this friendly and exciting competition!

This month we will continue to recognize our character education trait of responsibility. Please remind students of ways that they can continue earning character tickets and tokens each day by: doing your best, plan ahead, think before your act, consider consequences and be accountable for your words and actions towards others.

We’re also continuing to highlight Bully Free Prevention month. Our students learn the importance of how their actions and words affect others. Please ask your child(ren) about their new learning of acts of kindness and being friend to everyone. It’s the dolphin way!

**Reading Textbooks: Our school will be sending home obsolete reading materials for all grades in the upcoming weeks. These are resources your child(ren) can keep at home. Please feel free to add materials to your home book/or library collection for additional fun reading.

The Farmer’s Assembly is returning on Tuesday, October 17th from 8:30am-12:00pm.  This is an exciting one-day interactive program for all students in PK-5th to participate in activities that focus on current facts about the agricultural industry, food production, and the benefits of making healthy eating choices. This is also a great way for students to make a connection to our fantastic Garden Program as well. All the questions were centered around healthy food choices, and good health and fitness routines.  The game show also incorporated fun challenges that varied between different physical activities, team-building activities, and fun “minute to win it” style activities. Everyone loved Rampage, the Rams team mascot, who was there to help make this assembly the most fun and kick off a healthy challenge for the 2017-2018 school year!!! Los Angeles will experience a partial solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st from approximately 9:00am-12:00pm. The District has requested for all students to remain indoors between 9am-noon. Therefore, we will implement an indoor weather schedule for recess (10-10:20am) only. The lunch schedule will remain the same for K-5th grade. The special modified schedule is to ensure that all students/staff are aware not to view the eclipse without approved eyewear.  In cases where a student must leave the classroom (i.e., restroom, cafeteria, office, parent check-out etc..),they will be escorted by an out of classroom teacher, classroom or campus aide while outdoors during that time. Playa del Rey is not hosting a school-wide event, however teachers are planning special classroom activities for students to participate. If your child’s classroom has a special event planned, his/her teacher will send home a permission slip for you to sign and return on Monday. Please feel free to call the school if you have any further concerns or questions. Your continued support is appreciated.

Welcome Back to School!

Dear Playa del Rey Families,

Welcome Back!
I want to officially welcome you all to the start of the 2017-2018 school year. I also hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer. To our new and returning families, I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. As I begin my 8th year as principal, I welcome and value your dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.

All signs point to another incredible and productive school year. Our skilled and devoted staff is already planning and preparing for your child(ren). And, our much-appreciated FOP Booster Club is gearing up to welcome families at our annual Back to School Picnic on August 14th (12:00 pm) to provide volunteer opportunities, and offer other exciting events and programs. We are indeed a small, wonderful community with the common goals of nurturing responsible, caring students and promoting high-level learning.

New Staff
This year brings a few new additions to Playa. We are delighted to welcome Kendra Patterson to our preschool PAL Program.  Ms. Patterson brings a solid skill set and a gentle, sensitive approach to meeting children’s learning, social and emotional needs.

With the support of our board, we will continue to provide the arts for every child to include orchestra (gr. 3-5), drama, music and visual arts. We welcome the staff from Artsy Kids (visual arts) and Music Rhapsody that brings over 30 years of experience to local schools in our area. We are still fortunate to be able to offer enrichment from highly-qualified trained instructors.

Physical education will continue to be provided for every student. The District requires that every student receive 200 minutes per/week. With the help of our board president, Kerri Eich, our school received a grant to participate in the Physical Education Teacher Incentive Program (PETIP) for two years. Selected classes will have the opportunity to work with a certificated PE teacher on Wednesdays. Welcome Mr. Haynes.

Facilities Update
If you drove past the school during the summer you may have noticed a few maintenance projects. First, we re-striped our main playground for designated areas along with the emergency drill numbers near the track.  Another item on the list was our tree trimming project. Every tree has been scaled back from the main yard, kindergarten area, garden, and main entrance of our school.

The garden is developing into a beautiful learning space for all children thanks to our master gardener Ms. Martha and teacher/parent volunteers. Every grade level will have learning stations along with curriculum to integrate with science and math. Our garden depends on parent and community participation to remain an active and integral part of the students' learning experience. All families are invited to attend our weekend workshops.

Lastly, installation of portable air conditioning units have been added to our classroom- bungalow that is much needed during the warm summer months. More projects have been scheduled for the month of August to include a digital marquee, blue mesh lunch benches, a new play space for the kindergarten area and yes….the backpack hooks are coming!  We are so appreciative of the new accommodations we have and those to come.

Student Placement
A great deal of time, effort and thought has gone into the process of student placement for the 2017-18 school year. Class rosters will be posted in the assembly area and by the library on the day of the picnic.

All classrooms have been balanced academically and socially to meet the needs of all learners. Our classes are structured to provide equitable class sizes at each grade level.  ALL of our staff works hard to make school a positive experience for ALL students. Playa del Rey is eagerly looking forward to enriching your child’s life. Thank you for understanding that it can take a few weeks for a child to acclimate to a new grade, peer group and teacher.

Thank you to all who are helping prepare for the new school year. Your commitment to ensuring that Playa del Rey remains a celebrated and successful school is appreciated. I eagerly look forward to greeting students and families again. It remains an honor and privilege to serve as your principal.  Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of continued growth and achievement for all children.

Warmest Regards,

Valencia Blue
