Who we are

We are one of the smallest LAUSD Elementary Schools in Los Angeles. With only 290 students, we must fundraise for all extracurricular activities including PE, Music, Art, Field Trips, our Garden Education Program and more. We need your help to support our students’ extended learning opportunities. Find out how you and your business can be a Proud Playa Supporter. Contact us at info@friendsofplaya.org so we can work together to create more enriching experiences for our students. The Friends of Playa (FOP) at Playa del Rey Elementary School, through various fundraisers throughout the year, is responsible for the many activities and programs that enrich the school's basic curriculum.

We encourage and rely on monetary contributions and volunteer hours from parents and community partners to facilitate these programs.

What we support

The Friends of Playa at Playa del Rey Elementary School, through various fundraisers throughout the year, is responsible for the many activities and programs that enrich the school's basic curriculum. These programs include:

  • Garden Education - Martha our Master Gardener works with all students and teachers Bi-weekly to infuse science and math in the garden. Garden lessons bring our students closer to nature and an understanding where their food comes from. FOP supplements our garden learning experiences at a cost of $8,500 annually. With more funding we could offer more gardening experiences for our students.
  • Physical Education - We partner with the YMCA one day per week so all students get PE every other week with a cost of $10,000 annually with a goal of every week next year. Volunteers also help to keep our students physically fit so we can meet the state requirements of 200 minutes of PE bi-weekly. We are always looking for health and fitness professionals to guest speak and teach our students and teachers new moves.
  • Art - PSArts lost their grant for art so we are able to support art bi- weekly for students at a cost of $15,500 this year with a goal of every week next year.  We also have supplemental support through LMU student art teachers; many of our teachers have taken the Arts Training camp at LMU. Our school is 1 of 20 that received a 4-year federal grant to integrate the arts and culture into the classroom and we're currently in year 2.
  • Music and Drama - All Playa students participate in drama and music. This includes once a week music class, and 2 productions per year by all students at a cost of $41,100 annually. Our third - fifth grade students have drama weekly and have the option to participate in orchestra hosting concerts during the spring each year.  1st and 2nd graders have drama bi-weekly.
